A. The Rise and Development of the System

Creating of a PRTR system is being discussed for this time only. Thanks to various laws, canton governments follow emissions and wastes and they run databases. National office for data collecting is the Federal Office of the Environment, Forestry and Landscape. Maps of pollution level are processed; they are based on databases and measurements. Data collecting is ensured even voluntary thanks to the Responsible Care program. Results are published annually in summaries and information of the main pollutants monitoring are daily accessible at teletext. The Swiss Society of Chemical Industries collects data instead of small-sized enterprises.

Modification of the registers into an unified database which would be similar to a PRTR is being planned. Public data accessibility and software are being discussed and the pilot project is being prepared.
